2015 Wolfensohn Scholarship Recipients Announced

Three of Australia’s most promising public servants win Harvard scholarships

Frances Adamson, until recently, Ambassador, Cth Dept. of Foreign Affairs and Trade China, Michael Manthorpe, Deputy Secretary, Cth Department of Immigration and Border Protection, and Katarina Carroll, Acting Commissioner/CEO, QLD Fire and Emergency Services, are the 2015 recipients of the Sir James Wolfensohn Public Service Scholarship.

The scholarships will allow Ms Adamson, Mr Manthorpe and Ms Carroll to undertake an executive education program at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government in 2015 or 2016.

With the support of the former chairman of the World Bank, Jim Wolfensohn, the Harvard Club of Australia established the Wolfensohn Scholarship in 2012 to promote the development and delivery of good public policy. Each of the candidates was chosen on the basis of their potential to contribute to the benefit of Australian society.

Ms Adamson, was Australian Ambassador to China until November and is now International Advisor to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.  Ms Adamson’s chosen course is Leadership for the 21st century: Chaos, conflict and courage.

Mr Manthorpe, Deputy Secretary, Cth Department of Immigration and Border Protection.  Mr Manthorpe’s chosen course is Senior Executive Fellows.

Ms Carroll, Acting Commissioner/CEO, QLD Fire and Emergency Services.  Ms Carroll’s chosen course is Senior Managers in Government.

The three recipients were chosen from a wide field of candidates, all nominated by a Commonwealth, state or territory department or agency head. A shortlist of candidates was interviewed by a panel of Harvard University alumni comprising Luke Woodward (Gilbert + Tobin), Naomi Flutter (Deutsche Bank AG Australia & New Zealand), Joanne White (Commonwealth Bank) and Peter Thompson (the Australia and New Zealand School of Government).
